Hey! I follow your weight loss blog but this isn't about that so I'm doing it here. I'm trying get into freelance writing but I've never done it before. I'm just wondering what you get/what you charge for each article you write (on average). A lot of job postings are asking me to set or suggest my own rate and I don't have a damn clue what the going rate is for anything. Also, if you have to send them some writing samples, what do you send them? What topics do you write on?runningoutofcharacters

2/2 I have nothing else to ask just gonna thank you in advance if you send me advice on the whole freelance writing sitch. :)

Answer — Hey, all good questions!

1) What I charge depends on what I write. For SEO-optimized articles I charge around $.15-$.20 a word. For website landing pages, around $.50 a word. Product descriptions, maybe $.10 a word. It all depends on what you’re doing and who you’re doing it for.

2) Beware of many postings on sites like Craigslist. Offen they ask for writing samples, then basically just steal them. The best way to get around this is to send only work that has been published — like blog entries.

3) What you write on doesn’t matter as much as how you write it. An incredibly well-crafted blog about bikinis is much more impressive than a terribly written piece on Iran’s election process. Focus on the quality of your writing over the “impressive” nature of the topic itself.

4) To get some experience, start your own blog, offer to blog for local businesses, or even write product descriptions for friends who have Etsy shops. The more stuff you do for free now, the more you’ll have to show employers in the future. Also check out blogs that offer guest-posting and try to get your pieces accepted there.

I hope that helps a bit!
